Know about Salatul Tasbeeh

Salatul Tasbeeh (prayer of forgiveness/glorification) is a prayer which includes a specific verse (Subhaan Allahi Wal Hamdulillahi Wa Laa ilaha illal Laahu Wallahu Akbar) that is not recited in the five obligatory prayers. This is a prayer performed by Muslims outside of Fajr, Dhur, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Salatul Tasbeeh can be performed at any time except between midday and sunset. This prayer forgives those of all their sins and can be prayed once a day. If you can not pray it once a day, pray it once a week. If you can not pray it once a week, pray it once in a lifetime.

Useful Tips For Salatul Tasbeeh

  1. Do not count the number of times you have recited the Tasbeeh prayer on your fingers by putting the number of fingers up with each recitation. It is makrukh (not liked).
  1. To count, press down on your fingertips to keep track of how many times you have recited the Tasbeeh prayer. This is allowed.
  1. You may recite any surah after Suarh al Fatiha. These are just suggestions.
  1. Ensure you have enough time to pray. It is important to note that this prayer takes about 20-30 minutes to complete whereas the obligatory prayers range from 5-10 minutes.

Warnings Of Salatul Tasbeeh

Some scholars consider Salatul Tasbeeh as bid'ah. There is a difference of opinion as to whether the supporting ahadith are authentic. While there is consensus that the sanad (chain of narration) is correct, the debate falls on the matn (actual contents of the hadith) due to how different the prayer format is. Abu Dawud and Al-Albani classified it as sahih (authentic) while Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibn Taimiyah considered it da'if (weak) and discouraged the practice.

Method of Salatul Tasbih

This salah is performed in four

Raka’at at a time and can be offered in any part of the day and night besides the Makrooh times of sunrise and sunset. However, it is preferred before Dhuhr prayer. The tasbih for this salah is:

"Subhaan Allahi Wal Hamdulillahi Wa Laa ilaha illal Laahu Wallahu Akbar“
“All Glory and Perfection is to Allah, All praise is to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest"
  1. After starting the Salah and reciting Sana, recite this tasbih 15 times
  2. After reciting Surah Fatiha and another Surah, recite this tasbih 10 times
  3. During Rukuh, after saying prescribed glorifications, recite the tasbih 10 times
  4. After standing up from Rukuh, recite the tasbih 10 times
  5. In the first Sajda after glorifications, recite the tasbih 10 times
  6. In the Jalsa (between the Sajda) recite the tasbih 10 times
  7. Again recite the tasbih 10 times in the second sajdah

Repeat this procedure for all four Rak'at of the salah to complete the count of the tasbih to 300. It is important to take the following considerations into mind while performing this salah:

  1. Do not count loudly
  2. Do not count on fingers or using a tasbih
  3. It is recommended to count by gently pressing the fingers as a reminder
  4. If a count is missed in any position, make up for it in the next posture
  5. Try to keep the mind as focused on the Dhikr as possible. Slowly but eventually, the tasbih will start melting your heart during the salah, and give you an unprecedented spiritual experience
  6. Since the tasbih is about praising Allah and His blessings, it is a good practice to keep reminding yourself of His blessings and favors as you recite the tasbih

With the advent of Ramadan, it is an excellent time to incorporate it into our Ibadah to reap the full benefits of this excellent prayer.
